Navigating Change as a Small Business Owner

If there’s one thing small business owners learn quickly, it’s that adaptability is key. Just like Ross frantically shouting “PIVOT!” while trying to move that unwieldy couch in Friends, entrepreneurs often find themselves at a crossroads where they must shift strategies, refine their services, and embrace change—sometimes awkwardly, sometimes brilliantly.

Take, for example, ME! I started with a focus on nonprofit consulting services. Nonprofits are continuing to struggle with funding uncertainty and don’t necessarily have consulting services in their budget. I have built the framework, networked with several organizations, and will continue to offer those services and advocate for my nonprofit clients. As I assessed industry need and where I could fit, I have had to PIVOT. Investing in myself through training, mentoring, education and credentialing.  One major shift I am making is offering Drug-Free Workplace training, Return to Duty Assessments as a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), Workplace Wellness services, and more for business and industry partners.
Instead of staying stuck, I pivoted, expanding services where there is a need.

How can small business owners master their pivot moments without getting stuck in the stairwell of uncertainty?

  • Assess the Situation
Before making a change, understand the industry landscape. What are businesses asking for? Where can you fill a gap? Identifying emerging needs helps you pivot effectively.
  • Strengthen Your Foundation
Pivoting doesn’t mean abandoning everything—it means refining and expanding on what already works. Utilize your experience, education, credentials to find new spaces that align with your business goals. A solid foundation of workplace wellness, training, and strategic planning can evolve naturally to meet new demands.
  • Embrace New Skills
Businesses that thrive are those that continuously learn and grow. Invest in yourself through continued education, working with a mentor, earning a new credential, or simply researching industry needs and making those necessary changes.
  • Make the Change Visible
If you’re shifting your business model, ensure your website and brand messaging reflect the change. A website revamp or updated marketing approach can help clarify your new direction.
  • Trust the Process and YOURSELF!
Not every pivot is smooth, and sometimes, it feels as chaotic as moving Ross’s couch. But staying flexible, listening to feedback, and adapting with confidence ensures long-term success.
So, if your business is at a turning point, take a deep breath, grab your team, and PIVOT!
